For those of you that are thinking about trying CBD oil or are currently using it and you work at a place that does regular drug testing or looking to start a new career, this can be a scary question! Does CBD show up in a drug test???? Am I going to get fired for taking CBD oil? I am here to give you as simple an answer as possible to a rather complicated question.
I am going to start though by saying I am not a lawyer or a doctor and I do not know what your company uses as a baseline for your drug test. This is for informational purposes only and cannot be used to get out of any trouble with your employer.
Now that we got the legal mumbo jumbo out of the way lets dig right into this question. Does CBD show up in a drug test? The short answer is no, but there is a slight chance of a yes. Keep reading to find out why 🙂
Hemp CBD vs Marijuana CBD
To start I need you to understand the difference between hemp CBD oil and marijuana CBD oil. Hemp CBD oil is made from the hemp plant, looks a lot like the marijuana plant but it is not the same. The hemp plant is also known as industrial hemp has high levels of CBD and low levels of THC (the psychotropic component). The marijuana plant has high levels of THC and low levels of CBD.
If you buy CBD oil made from the marijuana plant it is going to have higher levels of THC which will likely show up on a drug test. If you buy CBD oil made from the hemp plant it will have between 0% and 0.3% THC which like likely not show up on a drug test.
Will hemp CBD show up on a drug test?
Most employer drug tests are not designed to test for CBD since it doesn’t get you “high”. It is always wise to check with your employer on what they are looking for on a drug test before you do anything. Most drug tests are designed to test for THC in an amount of <50 ng/mL, this is a pretty standard urine test. You would have to be consuming massive quantities of Hemp CBD oil with less than 0.3% THC to have this level in your urine. You would have to consume 1000 to 2000 mg of CBD oil in a day! That is a ton of CBD oil!
For example, I consume about 5-10 mg per day for normal aches and pains and anxiety relief. Some find they need more and up the dose a bit but that’s a big jump to 1000-2000 mg per day. Horses aren’t even given that much!
Even if a person was to consume that much and take a drug test it would show up as a false positive. If that same sample was then subject to a GC/MS (Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry) test to verify if the THC is actually in the person’s system, it would prove negative. Those two tests are more accurate and check exclusively for the presence of THC, this is why it would prove negative.
This all being said there still is a slight chance that you could fail a drug test. There is always a slight chance that taking hemp CBD oil that has trace amounts of THC 0.3% or less can show positive but highly unlikely.
What if I am still nervous about it?
Never fear, you are in luck! There is always another way 🙂 If you are still nervous about passing a drug test while taking CBD oil you can opt for the 0% THC CBD oil. You must be careful with this though since not all companies are straightforward with what is in their CBD oil and the amounts of THC in the CBD oil. Make sure that the CBD oil you buy has regular lab tests done on it and shows zero THC or ND for “not detected”.
THC free CBD oil takes away these trace THC amounts (0.3%), producing 0% THC in the product. This is the only way to make absolutely sure you will pass your drug test.
I must say this for legal reasons, the only way to be absolutely sure you will pass a drug test is to abstain from taking THC or CBD beforehand.
However, you can be quite confident you will pass a drug test as long as you are taking hemp CBD oil with less than 0.3% THC in it as long as you are following the dosing directions on the bottle and not chugging 2-3 bottles at a time. (not recommended)
You can be the most confident that you will pass a drug test by taking hemp CBD oil with 0% THC in it, even if you want to chug a few of these bottles you would most likely pass. (please do not chug bottles of CBD oil)
Once again I am not a lawyer or a doctor, I am just a guy who loves CBD oil and wants to share it with the world. I hope you have found this to be a helpful resource for you.
